[FLORA.org HelpDesk] Upgrading software, jumped gun on FLORA.org (fwd)

Sorry about this. I intended the upgrade of the HTTPD server to be a
planned upgrade where site administrators got appropriate notice. Instead
I didn't notice that httpd was being upgraded with some other libraries I
was updating.

Since this is an update from Apache 1.3 to Apache 2.0 there may be a
number of configuration nuances that are a bit unusual. Please inform me
as soon as possible of any issues.

Thank you.

Subject: Upgrading software, jumped gun on FLORA.org

I have upgraded the kernels on a few servers, and reboot them.

Bangalore & Madras (incoming mail server)
newdelhi (sponsored webservices).

I started to update some software on calcutta.flora.ca, the server used
for www.flora.org. I seemed to have upgraded more than I intended, and
this included an Apache upgrade. Please report any problems with
configuration that may need to be cleaned up with this upgrade.

Here is the list of RPMs updated. The intention is to over the next few
weeks bring this server up to the same level as the other servers. I am
using YUM pointing to a Fedora Core 1 + updates mirror.

I will do the following:
[update: glibc 2.3.2-101.4.i386]
I will install/upgrade these to satisfy the dependencies:
[deps: glibc-utils 2.3.2-101.4.i386]
[deps: php 4.3.4-1.1.i386]
[deps: gd 2.0.15-1.i386]
[deps: compat-db 4.0.14-2.i386]
[deps: php-mysql 4.3.4-1.1.i386]
[deps: tzdata 2003d-1.noarch]
[deps: php-ldap 4.3.4-1.1.i386]
[deps: pcre 4.4-1.i386]
[deps: db4-java 4.1.25-14.i386]
[deps: aspell 12:0.50.3-16.i386]
[deps: apr 0.9.4-2.i386]
[deps: apr-util 0.9.4-2.i386]
[deps: httpd 2.0.48-1.2.i386]
[deps: aspell-en 0.51-6.i386]
[deps: db4 4.1.25-14.i386]
[deps: db4-devel 4.1.25-14.i386]
[deps: glibc-common 2.3.2-101.4.i386]
[deps: gd-progs 2.0.15-1.i386]
[deps: db4-utils 4.1.25-14.i386]
[deps: gd-devel 2.0.15-1.i386]
[deps: php-imap 4.3.4-1.1.i386]

I needed to upgrade glibc on the machine. There were some security
erratas about other utilities.

In the process of updating glibc there were a number of dependancies. I
didn't notice Apache in there.

Updating Apache to a version that is currently being developed is an
update I wanted to do after the May crunch (Parliamentary cmtee today,
Competition bureau tomorrow, a few conferences
http://www.goslingcommunity.org/#events ).

Calcutta.flora.ca, the computer running the FLORA.org website, was
running a fairly old version of RedHat. RedHat 9 (which is newer) has
also been discontinued, so updating to Fedora Core is something that is
best to do to keep updated with security updates anyway.

<tech speek. Sorry>
Are the dependencies distribution dependant?

An apt-get upgrade does not install a diffrent version of apache:

challenger:/home/jlam# apache -v
Server version: Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) Debian GNU/Linux
Server built: Oct 26 2002 09:18:50
