(too old to reply)

The interim plan is to upgrade calcutta.flora.ca from the older Fedora
Core 1 to Fedora Core 4 some time in the afternoon of Friday February 10.
I don't have an exact time, but expect some downtime on this volunteer
server tomorrow afternoon.

This afternoon I disabled "bind" on that machine, instead pointing it to
external nameservers. This will further reduce the complexity of the
configuration on the machine, and remove services that are no longer
required.

OK Russell, if you have a minute, tell me what all this means to ME.
How will it change anything I do on Flora?
Cheers, and good luck with whatever you are planning.

You don't need to change anything. There will just be times tomorrow
afternoon where you won't be able to reach http://www.flora.org hosted
websites or your FTP account to manage FLORA.org related files.

Your email will work fine (which is on bangalore.flora.ca), and
Mailman mailing lists like this one will be fine (on newdelhi.flora.ca).
It is only the website, majordomo mailing lists, and FTP accounts to
maintain website related files that will be temporarily unavailable
during the upgrade.

After the update everything should be back to normal. If anything
isn't normal, let me know as it may be a glitch in the upgrade that I'll
need to fix.

These things should happen more regularly in the future so it won't
be such a drastic update of software all at once.

That was the plan. It wasn't until this afternoon that it got completed.

Since this is a major update of all the software, please verify that
everything is working. Once change between the earlier versions of PHP
an the current php 5.0.4 is that global variables aren't automatically
set for security reasons. If your scripts rely on this, please eithor
update them or let me know to turn this "feature" on for your directory.

http://ca3.php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.register-globals

There may be other things which are different, so please test all
scripts and confirm all is working.
